EMERY John

My fascination with the scraps and fragments of how things record memories started when I was a child. I spent hours exploring my grandparents’ long forgotten trunks. Old notebooks, faded papers, postcards and bits of string attracted me. But it was always the undefined fragment of an object or the battered leather cover of a journal that fired my imagination.

Over the years I have continued to be drawn to the visual power of journals, maps, and the typography of recording a time and place. My own journals take the form of sketchbooks and small watercolors that provide the basis for my work. These paintings are visual chronicles experiences, travels and adventures. The watercolor sketches, layered snippets of landscapes, visual textures and tromp l’oeil objects are constructed completely of paper.  The objects, like memories, are often not what they seem. The shifting perspective and use of three-dimensional formed paper provide the environment, but it is the viewer who must complete the story.

Although born and raised in the American Midwest, John Emery has spent the past twenty years shuttling back and forth between Ohio and New Zealand, where he has recently established a second home and studio.  These places—so far distant in miles and cultural experience—have distinctly shaped Emery’s vision and art.

Emery’s professional experience began with undergraduate degrees from the School of the Dayton Art Institute and the University of Dayton.  After receiving a graduate degree from the Manchester College of Art and Design in England, Emery joined the noted designer Read Viemeister in Yellow Springs, working for Vie Design for 16 years.  He subsequently opened his own award winning firm, Graphic Design Continuum.  Frequent sabbaticals to teach and travel have led him to colleges and universities in the U.S., as well as in New Zealand, including a stint in 2001 as the visiting artist at Christchurch College of Art and Design.

His paintings have been exhibited at the Center of Contemporary Art (Christchurch), the Dayton Art Institute, Akron Art Institute, University of Missouri, Kansas, Gallery of Art, the DaytonVisualArtsCenter and a number of other regional centers.  He is currently represented in the US by the Wyoming Gallery in Jackson Hole, Wyoming / The Sundance Art Center in Sundance, Utah / the Tamarack Gallery in Omena, Michigan / Art Source, in DaytonOhio. In New Zealand the Center of Contemporary Art in Christchurch and Saffron Gallery of Art in Timaru, represent him.
