SHIMMIN Bronwyn

Although South African born, I feel that I have come full circle by settling in South Canterbury with my ancestors hailing from this region (great great grandfather Fredrick Gascoyne was one of the founding members of the Waimate Town Council). I together with my husband, our two girls, two dogs and three cats have made South Canterbury our home, enjoying the proximity of the Southern Alps and lakes, and in particular the quality of light; big skies and the magnificent braided river systems. I spend a fair bit time off the beaten track; up river beds with my easel, paints, sketchbook and camera....

I look to capture light and colour in paint which defines a moment in time. I work predominantly in oils and acrylics but enjoy the creative spectrum of all mediums. I take my inspiration from life and prefer to paint on location or from my own reference sketches and photos, finishing the work back at my studio. My passion for painting extends to my passion for the environment; its beauty and fragility. These concepts I constantly strive, through both my representational and conceptual work, to achieve

I have been immersed in art practically all my life, attending art classes and workshops from an early age. I am mostly self-taught but have studied Interior Design, apprenticed under a number of well-known artists through to recently doing an art paper through MasseyUniversity, an Arts and Creativity Honours Diploma through TCL; and qualifying as a Golden Arts Education Programmer.

I am represented in a number of galleries and private collections within New Zealand and worldwide, Australia and Thailand, and further a field, USA, England and South Africa. I have been invited to exhibit in a number of exhibitions and was featured as Artist in Residence at the Saffron Gallery, Timaru. Art awards: Best Local Artist [Minerals to Arts 2006]; 2nd Acrylic/Mixed Media 2007; 1st Oils 2008; 2nd Professional 2009 (Alpine Energy Art Exhibition]; Judge’s Commendation [Darfield 2007]; People’s Choice in the Queenstown Art Society 2008 Exhibition; 2nd Acrylic/Mixed Media 2010 and 2nd Oils 2010 (Alpine Energy Art Exhibition).

I tutor a number of adult classes and workshops from my home based studio in Temuka. I also tutor workshops for a number of art societies and arts groups, locally and abroad, I have run various art extension programmes for local primary schools and have been invited to judge a number of art exhibitions.
