OLOUGHLIN Allan

allan-working

Allan stands 6ft 4” tall and it is no surprise to see his classic, original and quirky sculptures standing high beside him.

Often requested to produce small pieces, these works come naturally to Allan, he is at ease with grand scale. Allan studied art at school and with a few jobs in-between he has had a career in welding and mechanical engineering. Combining his creative mind and his skill for metal work, his sculptures have evolved into unique and stunning pieces of work.

To ask the question, where do you get your inspiration? , Allan would say “they just come to me, mainly in the night. My mind is a constant river of ideas and sometimes I don’t sleep that much.” You could say that Allan’s passion for photography, travel and love for the garden have been a background influence on him, however Allan is very much an individual and doesn’t see his art influenced by any one particular thing or person.

Sculpting now for over 10 years, Allan has held 2 large solo exhibitions at his property in Mandeville, Canterbury. With over 1000 people visiting the 2-acre garden, a perfect backdrop to his work.

He has also taken place in several exhibitions such as Auckland Sculpture on Shore,Garden Marlborough, Broadfields garden Lincoln in “Springfling”, Trotts garden in

Ashburton and the International Ellerslie Flower Show, Chch. Many of these events are fundraising and some proceeds have gone to charity.Allan has also supported the Cancer society with donated works being auctioned at their events. His works have successfully made their way into many private residences and Allan has also worked with and alongside clients to create commissioned pieces so they can enjoy the perfect piece for their situation.

Allan creates one of a kind metal sculptures, Arc welded steel either in its natural state, giving a rusty earthy appearance or galvanised in a protective Zinc coating giving a silver appearance for those sculptures that make an impact. Recently Allan has turned his hand to smaller in door pieces, so watch this space.Very popular in his last exhibition in Auckland, these pieces are polished in beeswax.
