Born in Christchurch in 1945, John was educated at St Andrew's College, Christchurch, where he studied figure drawing under sculptor Tom Taylor.

He served with the New Zealand Combined Services Medical Team in South Vietnam Dec 1969 to Feb 1970. John is a consultant physician, semi-retiring in March 2006 to pursue a career in art. He has held several solo and group exhibitions of landscape paintings but also has a special interest in portraiture with recent works including Diana, Lady Isaac (Isaac Theatre Royal) and Col. Bob Upton . John's talent has been recognised by a number of awards including the Telecom Art Award 1992, Montana World of Wearable Arts award (1998 highly commended and 2005 section winner), and the NZ Association of Artist Doctors 2006.
